JAMES G. JAY

1988 - SILVER HELMET "AMVET OF THE YEAR" AWARD

James G. Jay was bestowed the highest honor that AMVETS can give to one member. Jay received the Silver Helmet Award for his long and distinguished record of service to the nation, the veterans, his community and AMVETS.

The AMVETS Silver Helmet Award is a unique replica of the World War II G.I. helmet.  It has been presented for more than 30 years to ceognize outstanding accomplishments in various facets of American life, and has come to be known as the "veterans' Oscar."

Jay served as an Administrative NCO with the 407th Air Service Squadron, 14th (Flying Tigers) Aor Force in the CBI Theatre during World War II, and among his military decorations are the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, China Campaign Medal, China Victory Medal, China War Memorial Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. 

He retired as a Veterans Benefits Specialist of the U.S. Veterans Administration after 36 years of service.  He received numerous VA, AMVETS, VFW and DAV Awards for his outstanding service to the veterans.

Jay is the founder and Charter Commander of the VFW Post No. 8747 of New York City; Founder and Charter Commander of San Francisco's Golden Gate Post No. 34, AMVETS and named its only Honorary Permanent Commander in 1981; was 1974 "AMVET of the Year" in the Department of California.

He held leadership positions at nearly every level of AMVETS and has participated extensively in community activities.  Above all, Jay is a truly dedicated America and we salute him.

Among Jay's many honors and awards are the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of San Francisco's Meritorious Award for community service and 18 VA awards for veterans service.  He is widely known throughout the San Francisco area for activities on behalf of veterans.
