CLYDE and BARBARA CLARK are our original VECSM Chairman and his wife. They were married for 46 years.
Chief Clyde D. Clark, US Navy/Retired passed away in the early morning hours on November 21, 1996 at his home in East Palo Alto. He served during 4 major conflicts, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. Clyde was a charter member and Chairperson of the San Mateo Veterans Employment Committee for 3 1/2 years.
He was also the First Vice Chair to the NORCAL Veterans Employment Committee. Clyde was a member and past commander of many of the local veteran service organizations (Naval Retirees Association, Fleet Reserve Association, U.S. Submarine Veterans Association-Mare Island, Korean War Association, American Legion Post 828, Veterans of Foreign Wars 2310, and most recently he held the post of 12th District Commander for the VFW. He was also a member of the Elks.
Clyde was a naval veteran spending much of his time under the sea; as he would put it there are two types of ships in the navy--submarines and targets.
Where ever you saw Clyde--you would see him with his best fried, (his wife of many years) Barbara Both Clyde and Barbara would do everything and anything together to help the veterans and veteran programs in this county, especially the employment issues, chairing the VEC and organizing three job fairs, co-sponsoring three public TV shows on veteran issues and employment, job search workshops, lunches & bus pass programs, and much much more. They were both recently recognized by the Next Step Center with a wonderful plaque testifying to their commitment. "Caring Enough To Make A Difference!"
